Mercedes Schlapp's position as White House Strategic Communications Advisor isn't an easy one. She has to deal with a president that acts as his own director of communications and a myriad of legal disputes that can throw off the administration's messaging strategy and a number of Cabinet secretaries ensnared in their own controversy. But through it all Schlapp remains focussed on the task that she has been assigned, and is working closely with White House's political and legislative affairs departments and policy shops as well in the larger communication operation to coordinate policy rollouts. In her current position she's been focusing on several topics, including safety at schools and the use of opioids. As a current employee, Schlapp is not in contact with many reporters. The issue came up in March when she was the subject of a sudden surge in interest when it was it was announced that she would be a candidate for take over Hope Hicks's position as director of communication. Mercedes Schlapp does not have a simple job of White House strategic communication adviser. Mercedes Schlapp has to deal with an administration beset by numerous problems, such as a president who is acting as the president's own communications director and Cabinet Secretaries who are embroiled in their respective controversies. Schlapp, however, has not lost sight of her mission. She is in close contact with White House political affairs and the legislative team along with policy shops as well as with the overall communications department to coordinate the policy roll-out. Her main area of agenda has focused on issues like the safety of schools, trade and opioids. At the moment she doesn't deal much with journalists. The issue came up in March when she received a flurry of interest, after it was known that Schlapp would be the next candidate to replace Hope Hicks's job as the director of communications. The battle has been brutal. Friends of Schlapp as well as Tony Sayegh who is one of the other candidates for the post have been fighting over the media. Schlapp told that the Washington Examiner that she spoke with Sayegh about the recent article that was negative concerning him.
